Yorkshire

Published in 1828, Pigot's Directory includes the following in its description of Yorkshire: "The climate of Yorkshire may altogether be considered as not unhealthy; along the coast next to the German ocean it is very hilly, bleak and cold; the most unwholesome district being where the morasses and bogs prevail; and in the low parts of the west riding fogs and damps are severely felt.

As a manufacturing district, Yorkshire may be reckoned the second in the kingdom; the manufacture of woollen cloths of every description have been brought to such a state of perfection as to be considered equal, and in many respects superior, to those made in other places.  The iron works, which contribute materially to the opulence of the county, are very extensive, and find employment to multitudes of mechanics, miners, etc...

The north and east ridings abound with various sorts of stone for building, slate and limestone; there are also several springs of mineral waters, justly celebrated for their efficacy in various diseases.  It also possesses many material advantages and importance from the numerous coal and other mines, which yield abundance of fuel, metal, etc. for the various manufactories.  It has long been famous for the excellence of its breed of horses, particularly the east riding, in almost every part of which considerable numbers are still bred; the prevailing species are those adapted to the coach and saddle.  There are also many kinds of sheep bred, which are famous both for their size and goodness, and great quantities of the Scotch breed are fed in the low parts of the county.  The horned cattle of this county are considered equal, both in number and quality, to any other, and supplies the metropolis of Great Britain with a considerable portion..."
